Boutique hotels generally have high quality and stylish rooms, often with a theme, always luxurious and cutting edge in it's own unique way. Though they can be small as just a few rooms, they can also have hundreds of rooms in major urban locations. Mostly not affiliated with chains and often ran by a family or small staffs, their popularity have spawned a popular chain of larger boutique hotels called ';W Hotels'; or simply ';W';.
Sometimes confused with but not to different than a Bed and Breakfast, boutique hotels should always provide superior and very personalized service. Emphasis is on trendy luxury in guest rooms and bathrooms.
Two cities very famous for their boutique hotels are San Francisco and London. Expect rates to be high, but you can generally negotiate rates at smaller boutique hotels during slow periods. What is a 'boutique hotel'?
It is a smaller hotel that will give you more personalized service than say a huge chain like Sheraton or Hilton.

What is a 'boutique' hotel?
Boutique hotels are typically smaller, and has been mentioned, aim for a ';quirky'; look and feel. If all of the rooms in a chain hotel look alike from location to location, it's just the opposite in a boutique hotel.
They often have higher prices--sometimes extremely higher prices--depending on the hotel and the location.
Here's what the wikipedia has to say:

The host and guests are accommodated in the same building and the host has a separate individual living area from the guests.
Boutique hotels (which are often off-beat or ';quirky';) differentiate themselves from larger chain/branded hotels and motels by providing personalized accommodation and services / facilities. What is a 'boutique' hotel?
A boutique hotel is an expensive hotel. It's like the Bellagio in Vegas.. very high class and has expensive designer shops in it.

thxWhat is a 'boutique hotel'?
they have those near where I live in East Greenwich, RI. I'm sure they're everywhere. they are very small, expensive hold-overs from back in the day when people wore fedora hats and said things like, ';dame';, and ';down to the hoosegow with you!';. they are expensive places that rich people go to- I assume the accommodations are excellent. What is a 'boutique hotel'?
Fancy.
A trendy hotel with Oriental ';Room Service';...
IT IS A HOTEL THAT CATERS TO AN UPSCALE AND DEFINITELY RICH CLIENTELE AND OFFERS ALOT OF EXTRAS IN THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT .
A small, independent (as in not a chain) but trendy hotel.
They are smaller than then the chain hotels like the Hyatt or Hilton. I think that they also have fewer than 100 rooms and try to cater to a certain group of people like young hip business travelers

Are there any frequent guest programs for independent or boutique hotels?
I travel a lot for work and am burned out on the Marriott-Hilton-Hyatt scene. I have recently started seeking out mid-scale and upscale boutique hotels (like the Algonquin in NYC or the Metropolitan in Toronto) and I really enjoy the character you get at places like those. But I miss my free nights. Is there a network or frequent traveller program that focuses on smaller, boutique hotels? I know some or most of the smaller chains have their own programs; I'm looking for a program that gives me a lot of variety/choices in hotels and still allows me to get rewards.
I travel primarily in the US with about 3 trips a year to Canada; mainly on the East Coast but some West Coast travel; hotels themselves should be priced similar to an area Marriott/Courtyard/Hilton/Embassy Suites or else work won't pay.
Thanks in advance! Are there any frequent guest programs for independent or boutique hotels?

Kimpton Hotels is the name. Independent association loyalty programs: I Prefer (Preferred Hotels Group), Small luxury Hotels of the World, Leading Hotels of the World. These programs offer added value like upgrades, but not points for free rooms.

How are boutique hotels different from service apartments?
Both are personalised accomodation.. and involve common facilities like a common dining hall, maid services etc.. also common decor .. soem boutique hotels are owned by coporate houses for use as guest houses for their own clients/employees ......so is there any difference? Is it just abt short stay versus long stay, or is there anything else?
Do they both have help desks and lobbies? How are boutique hotels different from service apartments?
Boutique .......small, compact hotels. Usually they are rated from one to three star.
100 rooms seems to be the upper limit .
Service quality, the cleanliness and the hygienic conditions are significantly good in these pretty hotels. Mainly situated near sea, hills
Service apartments for long stay and frequent travellers
They offer all the conveniences of a hotel with the privacy and warmth of home. Whether you are a business traveler or holiday maker looking for more than just a regular hotel room, a serviced apartment is the answer. Giving you more space, more privacy and at a cheaper rate, most of our Apartments are available from one night to one year.
Fully Furnished and serviced apartments with facilities like, A/c Double bedrooms, Internet, ISD, Ctv, Fully equiped kitchen, 24hrs running hot water, 24hrs house Keeping and power backup. How are boutique hotels different from service apartments?
there are so meany difference
The fundamental difference is that a Boutiqe hotel is not part of a franchise or hotel chain.
Now, this could apply with serviced apartments also, unless they were part of a chain. The serviced apartments could be privately owned
With serviced apartments, you have a kitchen and your own cooking facilities if you wish to do so. It is more like an apartment. So therefore more suited to long stay.
A hotel room will not have this kitchenette facility.
Both are serviced in as much as linen and towels are changed, and the rooms are cleaned daily.
Both will have lobbies, althought the desk of the apartments (depending on where you stay) may not be manned after hours and will be lacking a night duty manager or night auditor that usually man the front office of a hotel.
In some cases, when staying in serviced apartments, if you are a late arrival, you collect your key from a safe outside the door using a pre-arranged pin code.
The difference between a boutique hotel and a normal hotel is that a boutique hotel is unique in terms of its theme, decor, etc as opposed to normal chain hotels which always have the same kind of basic decors. Like a Best Western or a Holiday Inn will look pretty much the same everywhere else in the world. As for the difference between a service apartment and a boutique hotel is that normally service apartment are just that....apartments and almost all of them have kitchens/kitcehnnetes where you can cook
